Social Bookmarking

Social bookmarking are web based services where users store and share bookmarks which they find useful and would have previously stored locally in their web browsers favourites. One stored they can be accessed from any web-enabled computer using a web browser. Users can choose to share their content and collaboratively share online resources using common tags. They use tagging to organise user based content and rss to distribute and syndicate the content.

Del.icio.us

del.ico.us is one of the more popular social bookmarking services but by no means the only one. It was initially developed by Joshua Schachter as a simple web page listing bookmarks with annotations, Schachter then decided to make these available on a web server so that friends and others could also view them. From there, it was but a small step to hosting others' lists, and so the social bookmarking tool del.icio.us was born.

The website del.icio.us (pronounced as "delicious") is a social bookmarking web service for storing, sharing, and discovering web bookmarks. It is now part of Yahoo!.
A non-hierarchical keyword categorization system is used on del.icio.us where users can tag each of their bookmarks with a number of freely chosen keywords (cf. folksonomy). A combined view of everyone's bookmarks with a given tag is available; for instance, the URL "http://del.icio.us/tag/wiki" displays all of the most recent links tagged "wiki". Its collaborative nature makes it possible to view bookmarks added by similar-minded users.
